Kesäaamu puikkojen kanssa / Summer morning with knitting needles

Virkatun kolmiohuivin, jollaisen osaisin tehdä itse mennen tullen.

I began this morning outside with my (Christmas) mug of tea. I have a hot pink and silver-glittery triangular scarf that belongs to my autumn-winter-spring wardrobe. For the summer it's tucked away in the not-in-season-pile, but it's in my thoughts all the same. I like triangular scarves, and this particular pinkie has been in my wardrobe for years. First of all it's already quite worn out, it's been looked at for long (possibly a bit too long too), thirdly I'm slowly shifting away from the years of hot pink (and gravitating more towards peachy-flamingo-ish) and lastly but not leastly, I've bought it from a shop. I have no idea where it's been made, who has made it and on what kinds of conditions. I can only guess, and that guess won't be too hard as it's bought  from one of the fast-fashion shops of this town years and years back. A crocheted triangle I could crochet with my eyes closed.

And then it dawned on me that there was a delightful triangular scarf on the Finnish yarn company Novita's spring magazine (or rather, instructions on how to make one). It would have all the pretty colours of turquoise and peach and brown, and it would twinkle a little bit with silver sequins. It would be warm (muchly needed in Finland) and big, and most of all handmade. It would fit in nicely with my summer coat, my autumn coat and my winter coat, and it looked easy enough to make. It could be made to replace the hot pink scarf (using one-in-one-out -principle), and one would know to own lush colours, home made and warm.

Joten sellainen on tulossa. Viittä eri lankaa, jokaista kerä. Kuvan oikeanlaitimmaisessa kerässä on mukana pieniä hopeanvärisiä paljetteja, niin ettei tule liian ikävä hopeakimallusta vanhassa huivissa.

So it's coming. Five different yarns, a ball/skein of each. The rightmost yarn on the picture has little silvery sequins on it, so I won't be missing the silver glitter on the old scarf.

Although it was a working day's morning, the sun was shining from the cloudless sky and the knitting was almost knitting itself while I drank tea. Not much counting and stare at the instructions, the scarf is really quite an easy make. And once the mornings look like this, who needs a vacation :)

Huivin olemassaolo on melko hyvin perusteltu, vaikka lankakaupassa ostosten tekeminen onkin minulle pääasiassa nimenomaan sitä, mitä toiset harjoittavat alennusmyynneissä - tolkkua vailla olevaa ahmimista.

The existence of the scarf is quite well thought over, although shopping at the yarn shop is to me exactly what other people do at the sales - binging at all costs. This project is wonderful in the sense that it uses five different yarns but only one ball of each yarn, so there won't be too much excess at the end of it laying around. And the yarn is bought specifically for this project, and the project is nearly halfway through already, so the chance of excess yarn laying around is slimming to none :)

I've become all the more interested in self made items when I get more into this wardrobe project. Or made by someone who is alive, a real person, someone with a face. A product that has been born by the hands of someone who hasn't been harmed in the process of making the item. A product that gives a living to it's maker - be it financial or creative or spiritual. A product that breathes and that has a story.
If it's the goal to keep one's wardrobe a certain "hotel-style"-moderate, it might not be worthwhile to tuck away stuff that's still wearable and nice just because it doesn't have a story to tell. So I don't mean to completely re-do my wardrobe overnight. But as the clothes slowly wear out, and it's time to replace them at the end of their road, it might be interesting to replace them so that they'd have a lighter footprint globally, but a much firmer footprint (or rather a signing) of how they have been made.

Aloitetaan nyt tästä huivista. Sen tekijällä on ainakin kasvot, eivätkä työolotkaan näytä olevan kovinkaan kehnoimmasta päästä, katsokaa vaikka:

So we'll begin with this scarf. At least it's maker has a recogniceable face, and the working conditions don't look particularly bad either, have a look yourself:
